Is the Equus 3200 the best value-for-money?

Where can I find a cheap and reliable reader and / or scanner which has multiple manufacturer versatility? I will be using this as a part-time evening job as a mechanic for many different car makes and manufacturers. I am willing to spend around $300 for an appropriate good diagnostic tool. Am I dreaming big?
