Automobile scan tools are special equipment tools for diagnosing faults and fault patterns. Some faults which may be intermittent are very difficult to be traced, so without such diagnostic tools you are repairing blindly, replacing parts on the go. This can get very expensive, and the fault may still never be found. So modern obd1 and obd2 engines should be scanned and repaired according to the logged fault data which was retrieved from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) or ECU (Electronic Control Unit). From this PCM you can get access to the information of the OBD (On-Board Diagnostic). Modern vehicles have become far too complex to repair them in the traditional old fashioned way where all components were mechanical, electrical or a combination of both.

These compact hand-held code readers or diagnostic scanners are specially designed to simplify and pin-point any faults which crop up by giving either a generic code, or a manufacturer specific code. This electronic numeric code is nothing more than an abbreviated descriptive form of the faulty component. Electronic software is usually coded in numeric forms, and it is also easier on the display screen, no long text. These codes are than checked against a table chart in a booklet for the proper code meaning (decoding from numeric numbers to verbal communication).

There are three types of automotive scan tools which can be further categorized into two: self-sustained (stand alone) or PC/laptop based. The only major difference between the two is that the latter works in conjunction to a computer with its dedicated software and hardware, while the former are compact hand-held diagnostic tools which contain everything needed inside them.works without a computer. Some benefits for the larger PC based scanners is that they process a normal PC screen, so are more eye-friendly to read and they can be upgraded easier and many times over, as opposed to the smaller devices.

These diagnostic Obd Scanners or readers should be used not only when a fault occurs (check engine lamp goes on) but as a diagnostic test to see if there are any components which are on the very edge of their limits. This way you can prevent the fault from occurring by taking the necessary steps, like changing a sensor for example. For the DIY enthusiasts and weekend mechanics there is a steep learning curve from the traditional mechanical engines they are used to, but with determination and armed with a high standard quality repair manual like the Chilton manuals, it is possible to do proper repair work, always with a diagnostic aid (scanner or trouble-code reader). If you manage to do this of your own, you will no longer need to pay the high expenses for scanning and possibly repairing of your vehicle. Secondly, you can keep a check over your vehicle’s condition with the help of a scan tool. In fact, in USA, the Federal Government has made it compulsory to use an automotive scan tool for all vehicles. These tools collect and store diagnosis or scan data in memory, just like computers. Using this data, you can analyze about the condition and find out which part requires maintenance or replacement.

There are many types of scan tools available in market these days. These include Actron scanners, Equus scanners, Elm scanners, etc. These scan tools can be further classified into OBD I and OBD II types.
