I’m quite sure you have found yourself in such a typical situation… like you are driving normally when suddenly this warning signal starts flashing in your instrument cluster. You start cursing this moment and find yourself in a dilema whether to continue driving or stop for assistance.

Yeh, I’m referring to the sudden and unexpected ‘Check Engine’ light illumination. This is very annoying to say the least, and probably panic strikes when you start thinking of your funds. “Oh, I cannot afford another extra expense this month….bla, bla…” This is why prevention is said to be better than cure. Now you can prevent most emerging faults before they become faulty enough to trigger that warning light, which I presume you hate so much! Right?

This is where I found that by using a quality and compatible diagnostic OBD scanner, in my case an OBD2 diagnostic scanner can save me from unexpected break-downs and large lumpy bills in maintenance and parts, (even labor), as I’ll explain later.

Using a professional diagnostic obd scanner or at least a quality fault-code reader you can find they fault and do your own diagnosis, tracing they fault in a backwards direction to find the real culprit/s. Using the Equus Innova 3160, an OBD2 compliant scanner that I have invested in, which also has the very welcome (by me) diagnostic software for the  ABS braking system, I can now do a regular diagnostic test, like a routine human check-up, when visiting your personal doctor. This way I can quickly detect anything that is about to transform into a fault, and most times if the repairs are done immediately, it will save other components from failing. I have had this awesome scanner for over a year and I have nothing but praise for it and in hindsight I should thank my friend Adrian who had convinced me that a simple scanner (the best you can afford within your allocated budget) is much better and cheaper than going to a dedicated modern mechanic for any repairs or a simple diagnostic scan test. You will be charged every-time you enter the door and there is no guarantee that you will  not be following your own footsteps to their garage door in the coming weeks or months when something else goes wrong.

So while I cannot proclaim to be a pro mechanic I can admit that I am quite good at technical DIY stuff. I have managed to trace a fault oxygen sensor and replace it successfully before further damage, which would effect the catalyst may have occurred. I also managed to trace some other throttle position sensor inaccuracies and fixed that too. All I spent was on the parts themselves. This was only possible because I had my “secret-agent” assisting me like a good angel.

I do not suggest buying used items, the price difference is usually not that much from the best Power Sellers who manage to reduce their prices because of the competitors.
