OBD Diagnostic Scanner or Code Reader?

Does anyone know how helpful Code Reader tools are?
I am looking at buying either Innova Can Obd2 Code Reader ($149.99), or the cheaper one, that gives you a booklet to look up the codes meaning ($89.99). Any comments?

I actually use a cheaper one I picked up from Mac tools that sells for $60 that I use as a professional. The Innova, from the professional approach of a master auto technician is more efficient in time-management as it does most of the “donkey work” for you, but unless you really read the book and learn how to use it fluently you will be barely using the tool capabilities. With that clarified, it is not difficult to understand and get used to its function modes. I always state that to invest in an expensive diagnostic tool you should be sure you are using it to its max user limits. This way you can appreciate and have a faster time-frame in diagnosis, meaning you will have a good return on your investment. Anyone who wants just the bare basics should invest in a cheaper alternative like an Obd Code Reader instead. You can still reset the fault codes after the repairs are done to stop the Check Engine light from flashing.
If you think you can do some basic maintenance and you’re ready to get your hands dirty when the time calls, you might have to think hard now before making your final purchasing decision as you will not want to be in a situation where you curse the moment you bought the reader instead of a scanner because of the price difference. You will be very frustrated at that moment, believe me, I’ve been through it when I first started.
The final decision is yours. Just remember to consider your options carefully before threading into your purchasing mode.
