OBD II scanner…does it matter what kind of OBD II scanner Ibuy?

Does it matter what kind of obd II scanner I end up buying? I have found two different price ranges which I call the cheap and expensive ones…I just want to know why the check engine light is on so i can get whatever it is repaired if need be…

For about $40-$60 you can buy a code reader which is on the cheap side of these tools. The reason they are cheaper is because they are not scanners. The code reader only extracts the trouble fault codes stored in the vehicle’s computer (known as the PCM or ECU).

That will do exactly what you’re after, and most good quality OBD readers have a ‘reset fault’ function to clear the faults, once the required repairs are done. The scanner on the other hand has much more diagnostic functions which can come useful for anyone doing their own repairs, or do just that for a living, in simple words a mechanic. I would have to mention as always to check for your product’s compliance regards to your car’s interface. If you do not find your car listed with that particular reader when buying online just ask the vendor for a confirmation. The same goes when buying at auto factors spares. Check on the code reader’s box or the code reader’s manual to see if it will function on your car. Luckily for you the OBD II system is much more standardized in its coded software that it should be much less of an issue — but always check before buying.
