Obd2 Reader not working on my car!

Why isn’t my obd2 reader working on 1996 vw jetta?
I have just recently bought a brand new Innova 3150 canobd2+abs reader and I was trying it on my VW Jetta and it would get an error and not connect to it. Is there something I’m missing or have I just wasted 300bucks of my hard-earned wage?
OBD2 was not installed on European cars until the year 2000 for gasoline/petrol and around 2004 for diesels. Earlier models use all different obd protocols and you will need one specific to Volkswagen Audi group vehicles. Your best bet is either to find somebody who needs a new auto-scanner and sell it on for a slight discounted price, or keep it if you are intending to purchase a more modern vehicle sometime soon.
