Is there a free car code reader software for PC?

Is there any free pc software for a generic car code reader?
I have a non-branded car code reader – the USB cable that connects to the OBD2 port in the car, but what software would work with it? Please just tell me if you know of any as I got this cable from a friend – but he does not have any software, and the cable does not have any brand name on it or any other reference.
