1990 Subaru Legacy LS automatic transmission not shifting?
Had trans rebuilt by trans shop 6months ago, now is back to trans shop and they confirm it is still good. So I decided to have a second opinion and ended up in another trans shop for second opinion. The same conclusion was given, as the first shop, everything seems fine. I was told that the ECM is bad.
What else could be wrong, and where can I get a decent OBD1 diagnostic scanner? Is Actron SUPER auto scanner CP9145 good for my Subaru 1990 Legacy LS wagon.

There is a very small chance that you have a bad ECM. How can a second shop tell you that the tranny is good, if it is not shifting? Sounds bad to me. Anyway, there are a lot of used tranny control modules available, so go for one of them. The 90 and 91 share the same unit. I think something has gone wrong from the rebuild. I have rebuilt over 100 of those things.
As far as the code reader goes, the 90 has a built-in diagnostic program in the ECM. Plug the green single wire connector together. It is under the dash on the right side of the steering column. When you turn on the key, the red LED on the ECM will flash the code.
There is also a sequence that you can go through with the shifter on the tranny to pull a code out of it too. You will need to buy a Chilton’s manual to get the sequence.

Hi George,
Your best bet is to check the oxygen sensors,including their wiring for corrosion. Also check other sender unit sensors and their wiring for any frayed wires or corrosion. Without a diagnostic reader/scanner it is difficult to pinpoint the fault. You will have to check each individual sensor with an multimeter for resistance and its respective wiring for corrosion, loose connections and take voltage inputs through a multimeter, comparing them with a manual.
Your best bet is to go at a reputable Subaru agency for a diagnostic check, or else save some money and buy a diagnostic OBD reader which will give you the exact fault code. Should be much easier, quicker and usually more accurate diagnoses is given.
Hope this helps you and good luck with tracing your fault/s quickly. Intermittent lighting ON and OFF means something is either on it way out or loose connection or corrosion in wiring. More difficult to trace correctly.
